A head full of extensions isn't the only way to fake fullness if you have thinning or flat hair. There are easy ways to give a boost to fine hair, says Sarah Lund, style master for Kevin Murphy. Step one is to ask your stylist for a volume-enhancing haircut, like a blunt bob if you have straight hair, or a cut with tons of layers that frame your face if your hair is more textured. For inspiration, we've rounded up our favorite volume-boosting celebrity haircuts ahead.

Once you have the right haircut, it's all about how you style it. A braid here and some dry shampoo there can make a major difference in how full your hair looks, so we asked Lund for a few helpful styling tips for thin hair. First, you should always blow dry."Blowdrying allows you to 'set' your hair from wet to dry to create volume and longevity in your style," says Lund. "I recommend blow drying with your hands, moving the hair around in all directions to get lots of movement and volume."

As for teasing to make hair look thicker, do it with care: "Giving yourself a small lift off the roots is a good idea, just proceed with caution," she says. "Use a boar bristle teasing brush — I suggest no more than three swipes with the brush when teasing and make sure to thoroughly smooth over the top." Finally, remember that dry shampoo is your best friend. "Dry shampoo is designed to absorb oils while adding volume and texture," Lund adds. You can also try volumizing powder. "A volumizing powder is the perfect tool for a quick pick-me-up during the day," she says. "Simply tap the powder on your roots and work in with your fingers."

Sleek Middle Part Updo

Take a cue from Zoe Saldana and pull your hair into a low bun or pony. This style doesn't require any volume to pull off, making it the perfect option for someone with thinner locks.

Sleek Bob

If you'd prefer to keep your hair unlayered, go for a chin-length bob. This short style keeps your hair bouncy, like Lucy Liu.

Beachy Waves

If you want your hair to look long and effortless like Blake Lively, try adding texture to your strands to make it look like you just jumped into the ocean.

Wavy Bends

January Jones adds volume to the root by adding in loose curls near the crown. This is a great option if your hair would otherwise fall flat against your head.

7 of 50

Ribbony Highlights

Long and layered hair like Priyanka Chopra's gets an extra oomph with thin, light-reflecting highlights. On thinner hair, these give the appearance of fullness.

Straight with Texture

If you hair is on the straighter side, don't worry — it doesn't have to be pin-straight! Take a page out of Cameron Diaz's book and add some mousse to give it a volume boost.

Loose Updo

Create tons of volume by teasing your hair before pulling it back. Leave a few pieces out in the front, like Halle Berry, for the ultimate thickening effect.

Piecey Waves

If you hair is long and straight, like Padma Lakshmi's, you can still give it definition. Add a lightweight texturizing cream to the ends to define your hair.

Long Blunt Bob

Jennifer Lopez's epic hairstyle is inspiring us to revitalize our hair. "Blunt untextured ends help keep a solid foundation to fine hair, making the overall look seem fuller and extremely healthy," says Lund.

12 of 50

Long Layered Waves

Hilary Duff's length and layers are perfect for those with fine hair, says Lund. "Long soft layers create movement and make creating volume easier as the hair is lighter," she says. "Adding waves increases that fullness and texture."

SHOP WAVING IRON

Deep Side Part

Give yourself a deep side part like Olivia Munn's — it's the easiest and fastest way to create dramatic oomph. It creates height and fullness, and Lund offers this pro tip: "Switch your part up when hair becomes limp to revive the full feeling!"

14 of 50

Volumizing Chignon

With so much lift, you'd never know Margot Robbie's hair — pulled back into a chignon here — only falls to her shoulders.

15 of 50

Long, Blunt Bangs

Ask your stylist to start your bangs towards the crown of your head, allowing them to consist of more hair and thereby look thicker, like Jessica Biel's. Lund adds that this fringe hairstyle also draws the eye towards the face and away from your thinner ends. If you have oily hair, make sure sure to keep them from getting greasy, whether it's by washing just your bangs daily or by utilizing dry shampoo.

SHOP DRY SHAMPOO

Teased Soft Curls

Sally Field's hairstyle shows us how a curling iron and a little bit of teasing at the root can go a long way.

17 of 50

Brushed Back

By foregoing a part and brushing her hair with plenty of volume, Meryl Streep shows us how to add dimension and lift without much effort.

18 of 50

Sky-High Pony

By putting your into a super high pony, you can add the illusion of fullness (just look how voluminous Busy Phillipps' hair looks!). Plus, wrapping hair to tie it instead of an elastic adds more volume.

19 of 50

Voluminous Ends

Avoid a lifeless half-up/half-down by stealing a page from Alexa Chung's ever-insouciant style book. To achieve her waves, spritz Ouai Wave Spray onto damp ends before you finish styling — the veil is optional.

Super Sculpted

Ruby Rose demonstrates a genius way to fake volume on her short hair. Use a heavy-duty sculpting pomade like the Sachajuan Hair Paste to keep strands from falling flat.

SHOP POMADES

Flipped-Out Sides

This subtle, modern version of the flip made famous by Farrah Fawcett — and worn here by Robin Wright — instantly adds width to hair that would otherwise lay limp.

22 of 50

High Messy Ponytail

The height and messiness of Kate Beckinsale's ponytail is only part of what makes this style look voluminous. The pins holding the sides of her hair in place are also helping to prop up the front of her hair for more height.

23 of 50

Asymmetrical French Braid

Plump up your a pulled-back look by French braiding one side, seen here on Lucy Hale. This makes it stick out a little further from your scalp without looking unrefined or messy.

24 of 50

Pixie With Pushed Back Bangs

If your hair is short, add a little wax or pomade to the front and push it backwards so it sticks up a bit, just like Kristen Wiig did; this gives the impression that the rest of your hair is fuller.

SHOP HAIR WAX

25 of 50

Loose Spiral Braid

Instead of a tight three-strand braid that shrinks the look of already-fine hair, try deeply parting your hair and loosely twisting two sections to the side, like Kirsten Dunst.

26 of 50

Subtle Bouffant

This isn't the sky-high bump from the '60s. A little volume at the crown of the head gets the job done, and Kate Middleton is proof.

27 of 50

Not-So-Subtle Bouffant

For dressier occasions, feel free to go bigger with your bouffant. Lots of teasing at the crown helps create retro-inspired volume like Rebel Wilson's.

28 of 50

Shaggy Lob

The long bob keeps popping up on red carpets everywhere because it can so easily volumize limp strands. Just ask your stylist for some textured layers to add a little boost for a look like Emma Stone's.

29 of 50

Half-Updo With Bangs

A sleek yet wavy hairstyle with a little teasing towards the crown, plus thick bangs (Zooey Deschanel's signature look), gives the appearance of fuller hair.

30 of 50

Floral Headband

Try pinning up your hair, then add a floral headband in a complementary color to your own hair, like Elle King did, to create the illusion of volume in a uniquely pretty way. For example, blondes should wear yellow or pale pink buds, redheads can try deeper magenta or red flowers, and dark-haired ladies should pick deep reds and purples.
